Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about TwinCounsel

Product & Technology

How is TwinCounsel more accurate than other AI tools?

Our Context Engine builds complete matter understanding from all your emails, documents, and calendar events. Unlike generic AI, TwinCounsel knows your specific case details, deadlines, and preferences—resulting in dramatically higher accuracy. We've conducted over 40 attorney interviews and a two-month embedded study within a solo law firm to ensure our AI understands the nuances of legal work.

How does TwinCounsel learn my preferences?

Our Context Engine analyzes how you delegate tasks in emails and remembers your specific requirements for different document types and workflows. The more you use it, the more personalized it becomes. For example, if you always want cover letters formatted a certain way or prefer specific language in subpoenas, TwinCounsel captures and applies these preferences automatically.

What makes TwinCounsel different from other legal AI tools?

Most AI tools require you to learn new software and change how you work. TwinCounsel works directly within your email inbox—the true "nervous center" of your firm. It automatically creates organized lists of your cases, identifies parties, tracks files, builds timelines, and understands priorities, all from your existing email workflow.

How does the Context Engine work?

The Context Engine is our core technology that allows the AI to understand email content and extract meaningful information about your cases. It securely accesses your emails, attachments, and calendar to build a rich, real-time view of what's happening across all your matters. This deep understanding enables much more accurate and relevant work product.

Pilot Program & Access

What's included in the pilot program?

Pilot participants get full access to document prep automation and calendaring features, plus direct input on feature development. You'll work closely with our team to customize TwinCounsel for your specific practice needs. As a pilot participant, you also get dedicated onboarding, priority support, and early access to new features as they're developed.

How do I apply for the pilot program?

We're currently accepting applications from solo practitioners and small law firms (2-5 attorneys) who are interested in enhancing their legal support capabilities. Priority is given to firms that can provide feedback and help us refine the product. The application process includes a brief consultation to ensure TwinCounsel is a good fit for your practice.

When will TwinCounsel be generally available?

We're focusing on perfecting the product with our pilot participants before general launch. Based on feedback from our embedded law firm study and ongoing pilots, we expect to expand availability throughout 2025. Pilot participants will have continued access and influence over feature development.

Why should I join the pilot instead of waiting for the general launch?

Pilot participants get exclusive access to shape TwinCounsel's development based on their specific needs. You'll also get grandfathered pricing and priority access to new features. Most importantly, you'll start seeing time savings and efficiency gains immediately rather than waiting months for general availability.

Security & Confidentiality

What if I have confidential client information?

TwinCounsel uses enterprise-grade security and works within your existing confidentiality protocols. All data processing follows legal industry standards with attorney-client privilege protections. Our system is designed specifically for law firms and understands the critical importance of maintaining client confidentiality. Importantly, no AI models can access client or lawyer data for training purposes, ever.

Is using AI as a legal copilot compliant with California legal ethics rules?

Yes. TwinCounsel operates within the bounds of California Rules of Professional Conduct. Under Rule 5.3 (Responsibilities Regarding Nonlawyer Assistants), attorneys may use non-lawyer assistants—including AI systems—to perform paralegal functions, provided the attorney maintains proper supervision and ensures competent representation. The California State Bar's "Practical Guidance for the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in the Practice of Law" (November 2023) specifically addresses AI use under Rule 5.3, stating that "managerial and supervisory lawyers should establish clear policies regarding the permissible uses of generative AI" and ensure compliance with professional obligations. TwinCounsel presents all work product for attorney review before finalization, ensuring you maintain the required oversight and professional responsibility under Rule 1.1 (Competence) and Rule 1.3 (Diligence). The AI augments your legal expertise rather than practicing law independently, consistent with the State Bar's guidance that "a lawyer's professional judgment cannot be delegated to generative AI and remains the lawyer's responsibility at all times."

How is my data protected?

We implement multiple layers of security including encryption at rest and in transit, secure access controls, and regular security audits. Our infrastructure is designed to meet the security requirements that attorneys need for handling sensitive client information. Your data is never used to train AI models and remains completely confidential to your practice.

Can TwinCounsel access my emails without permission?

TwinCounsel only accesses emails and documents that you explicitly grant permission for. You maintain full control over what information the system can see and process. The AI works within your existing email security and access controls.

What happens to my data if I stop using TwinCounsel?

You maintain full ownership of your data. If you choose to discontinue service, we provide options for data export and ensure secure deletion of any processed information according to your preferences and legal requirements.

Practice Integration

How does TwinCounsel integrate with my existing workflow?

TwinCounsel is designed to work with your current email-based workflow without requiring changes. You simply delegate tasks via email as you normally would with any team member. During onboarding, you'll set up TwinCounsel with a dedicated email address and provide access to the systems you want us to use—just like onboarding any new team member. The AI integrates with your existing email system and connects to your calendar, document storage, and practice management systems based on your preferences.

Will TwinCounsel work with my practice management software?

Yes! Our advanced tool-use capabilities are designed to work with major legal CRMs like Clio, MyCase, and PracticePanther. We're currently testing these integrations with pilot participants to ensure seamless data flow and compliance. This allows you to get more value from tools you already pay for.

How long does it take to set up TwinCounsel?

Setup typically takes just a few minutes. Unlike traditional training processes, which can take weeks or months, TwinCounsel can start assisting immediately. The AI learns your preferences over the first 2-3 weeks of use, becoming more accurate and personalized over time.

What if I already have paralegals?

TwinCounsel is designed to augment, not replace, your existing team. It can assist with routine document prep and calendaring tasks, freeing your human paralegals to focus on higher-value work like client interaction, complex research, and case strategy. This allows you to handle more clients more effectively and enhance your team's overall capabilities.

Billing & Business Model

How does billing work with automated legal support tasks?

TwinCounsel enables you to maintain your current billing practices while increasing efficiency. For hourly billing, you can continue charging clients for legal support work while enhancing your team's capacity. For flat-fee work, the time savings directly improve your profit margins. The AI helps you deliver consistent quality while improving efficiency.

Will this affect my billable hours?

TwinCounsel is designed to help you handle more clients and cases efficiently rather than reduce billable work. By automating routine tasks, you free up time for higher-value legal work and can take on additional clients. The focus is on improving capacity and quality, not reducing billable opportunities.

What types of law practices benefit most from TwinCounsel?

Solo practitioners and small law firms (2-5 attorneys) who handle significant document preparation see the most immediate benefit. Practices in litigation, family law, real estate, and other areas with routine document workflows are ideal candidates. TwinCounsel enhances existing support capabilities while maintaining your current team structure.

Support & Training

How quickly can I see results?

Most attorneys see immediate time savings on their first delegated task. For example, tasks that normally take an hour (like preparing subpoena packets) can be completed in about six minutes. The AI becomes more accurate and efficient as it learns your specific preferences over 2-3 weeks.

What kind of support do you provide?

Pilot participants receive dedicated onboarding, priority technical support, and direct access to our development team for feedback and feature requests. We also provide training on best practices for delegating tasks and maximizing the benefits of AI automation.

What if TwinCounsel makes a mistake?

All work product is presented for your review before finalization. TwinCounsel is designed to augment your expertise, not replace your judgment. The AI's accuracy improves over time as it learns your preferences, and our Context Engine provides much higher accuracy than generic AI tools.

How do I get help if I have problems?

Pilot participants have direct access to our support team and development team. We're committed to ensuring your success with TwinCounsel and provide responsive support to address any issues quickly.

Future Development

What features are coming next?

We're developing additional capabilities based on pilot participant feedback, including digital case file management, client communication automation, and enhanced legal tech integrations. Our roadmap is driven by real attorney needs identified through our research and pilot program.

How can I influence TwinCounsel's development?

Pilot participants have direct input on feature priorities and development decisions. We regularly collect feedback and incorporate suggestions into our product roadmap. Your specific practice needs help shape how TwinCounsel evolves.

Will TwinCounsel eventually handle all legal support work?

Our research shows that TwinCounsel can enhance roughly 50% of legal support workflows initially, with a clear path to assisting with 85-90% of remote legal support tasks. We're building capabilities systematically based on what provides the most value to practicing attorneys and their support teams.

Getting Started

What do I need to get started?

You need an email system and regular document preparation needs. TwinCounsel works with standard email platforms and integrates with common legal software. No special hardware or software installation is required.

How much time should I expect to spend learning TwinCounsel?

Because TwinCounsel works within your existing email workflow, there's minimal learning curve. You delegate tasks via email just as you would with a human paralegal. Most attorneys are productive within their first session.

What if TwinCounsel isn't right for my practice?

We work closely with pilot participants to ensure TwinCounsel meets their needs. If the system isn't a good fit, we provide options for transitioning out while ensuring your data remains secure and accessible.
